1.) Hosted by ? Pg 253: “. . . whenever a white man does that to a black man, no matter who he is, how rich he is, or how fine a family he comes from, that white man is trash.” Why does the last word come crashing down on the kids’ ears? Look at the context for other clues.

I think that the kids expected to hear thatif a white man had perpetrated the crime then it would be O.K. but instead they heard that he is trash.
wow c! you are amazing! i agree with martin..... well a little. People do judge by color. and it is unfair
I think it shockes the kids because like martin said the kids expect it to be alright because the man is white. When they hear this they are taken back because it is a new thought!
In the book it says that Atticus was speaking softly and then the last word "crashed" on their ears, I think maybe he said it in a certain way that shocked them a bit because they had never heard him speak bad about people like that, usually he tells them to be nice and not to judge so when he says this it crashes on their ears or shocks them.
Maybe the kids think it applies to them. Or maybe they tought that because he was white he was okay and it shocked them when Atticus told them that he was trash.
I think they were raised in a society that believes white men are better, so to hear a white man be called trash would be like hearing your mom called a man... which is, of cours, preposterous.
I think the kids are so used to hearing people saying how much better white people are than blacks. They just didn't know what to think about it.
The kids are probably baffled because at their age they just listen to what their parents say so it's crazy to hear that a white man is trash is crazy when he does a crime
well i think that atticus is so nice to everyone else but then all the sudden he is calling people trash...I was very surprised when he said that. but i do think that this statement is a deep and good one.
I agree with Martin
i agree with rileyit was a very unexpected thing to say
They may of thought that if he says all white men are trash. they are trash too.
I believe that scout, Jem, and Dill were surprised when Atticus says that because they haven't seen a side of hem like that before.
I think the kids are used to hearing that blacks are trash, not whites. To hear this the other way around took them for surprise.
amy is right
